Dear Parents,
Here is some information about how to get your child an instrument for band. Please read over all of the information and contact me if you have any questions. There are many different ways to obtain an instrument. The most common is to rent one from a local music store. These stores send representatives to our school every week and if there is anything wrong with your instrument, they provide another one for you until it is fixed. If you already have an instrument at your house or you are borrowing one from a relative, please bring it in so I can look at it and make sure it works properly. Sometimes the instrument needs to be fixed or oiled up if it has not been played for a long period of time. If you choose to find an instrument from a garage sale, local pawn store or e-bay, please use the following list of recommended brands. These instruments have had a good reputation and replacement parts are readily available if your instrument needs fixing. You can find good deals when bargain hunting, but beware that the instrument may need to be fixed before it can be played and this can cost several hundreds of dollars. The following are recommended brands of instruments: Flutes Clarinet Trumpet/Trombone Percussion Yamaha Yamaha Bach JPK – Junior percussion kit Gemeinhardt Buffet Holton This will include a xylophone Pearl LeBlanc Yamaha and snare pad. We will be Jupiter starting with the xylophone and then progressing to the snare pad. Clarinet students need to have size 3 Vandoren reeds and a B45 mouthpiece. Trombone students need to play on a 6 ½ AL mouthpiece. Trumpet students will need a 5C mouthpiece. If you are renting an instrument, the mouthpiece should come with the instrument, not be sold separately . There are instruments available to rent from the school. There are limited numbers of instruments. We ask for a $50 per year instrument use donation. If you have financial difficulty, please contact me as soon as possible. All students will need to purchase the Standard of Excellence book 1 (red) for their instrument . It is not necessary to purchase a care kit for your instrument. Many of the local stores allow you to order online. The representatives will deliver your instrument and book to the school. If you have any questions, please contact me. I check email on weekends from home. Thank you, Susan Watford 407-249-6309 x 228 watfors@ocps.net |
