While I teach technique, I also teach perception: how to see in order to render an object realistically. I often alternate between observational rendering and abstraction.  Abstraction often provides a relief from the intensity of observational drawing and provides those who struggle with realistic rendering greater success in their art projects.  Beyond that, I like to expose students to perceptions of people from other times and places.  I never like them to copy, but I do want them to be exposed and influenced and discover their interconnectedness to other cultures, people, and nature.  Beyond all this, I like students to discover their own iconography and their own perception. Though we all teach our subjects, we teach individual students first.  I like to latch on to that individuality and help students explore themselves more deeply, discerning their own interests and learning to communicate them in images.
