Reading and Language Arts:
Coming back from the holiday, we will be doing some review and routine for the first two weeks such as spelling words, earobics, literacy stations, etc. For the second half of January, we will be targeting Literacy skills and vocabulary as our main focus.
More specifically, literacy skills will teach our students not only the essentials of recognizing and understanding what they read, but more HOW to read. We will be concentrating on a concept every two days and will be consistently following through with them. (prediction, main idea and details, relationship, etc.)
We will continue to do spelling words, but will focus less on those words and more on science vocabulary and their usage. We will be having spelling bees or another whole group spelling game on Friday instead of the spelling test. Instead, students will take home a list of science vocabulary pertaining to our topic and they have to do an exercise with these words EVERYDAY. This will be consistent and I will be communicating with you before we start, what these daily exercises will be. Please support and help your child adjust to this new concept.

Science:

We are still working on plants: their system, life cycle, parts, habitats and adaptation . We have also started a science vocabulary notebook which students will be using almost every day. In it, students will be learning and developing a new science word by predicting, hypothesizing, illustrating and understanding. Students will be researching, compar ing and contrasting and using creative writing within this science topic.

Other:

Homework is always 20-30 minutes of reading, whether in English or in a foreign language, as well as a spelling packet given on Monday and returned by Friday. Unless there are special projects, this will be the consistent homework procedure until the end of the year.

** My webpage is going through technical difficulties. Thank you for your patience as I am working through them. I will inform you as soon as my site is up and running!

** Students enjoy working with hands-on projects when approaching a new topic. Please help us by donating materials we need: play dough, bean bags, paint, crafty materials, etc. There is a “giving tree” outside our classroom with apples of things we need.

Math:

We are still going through Topic 4: Recognizing Numberals 0 - 9. In this topic, students will learn to solve word problems, write, identify, symbolize, represent, and add using these numerals. Please help your child by writing out these numbers and helping them recognize these words as sight words. You can also practice the different ways to represent numbers (for example: five fingers on one hand make five, two fingers and three fingers make five, one finger and four fingers make five...)Make it fun by making it a matching game!

Reading and Language Arts:

As we come back from the holiday, we will stick to routine and and review December concepts but slowly will be integrating more reading reading and fluency skills. We continue to review different letters per week developing our phonemic awareness and phonic skills. Students are bringing home letter bags that they should bring to school throughout the week with objects they have found at home that begin with that letter. They have been enjoying this “scavenger hunt” as have I. Thank you so much for participating in this with your child. In addition to this, students continue to work on their chunking and blending of letter sounds. We have been using a software known as Earobics which has been a great asset in developing these skills.
We will also be working with more sight words now. Students will review words with me at the beginning of the week and will practice them everyday. I will be sending home a list of these words on Monday instead of the weekly calendar. Please review and identify these words with your child. Help them by practicing their blending and chunking which they use at school. At the end of the week students will be assessed by observation, small group, or whole group.

Please read with your child every day to encourage a positive introduction towards literacy!

Science:

We will be sill be studying growing animals but will also focus on growing plants and the parts of a plant.  I will also need a lot of help with future projects. Please sign up with ADDitions and let me know your time of availabili ty.

**I will continue communication with you through our daily agenda, weekly homework sheets, emails, the home-school communicator (red folder) and my website once it is updated.

**Students love to do hands on, kinesthetic learning projects as they approach a topic. We really need materials such as play dough, bean bags, paints, and other crafty items. We have a “Giving Tree” outside our classroom filled with things we need. Please take an apple and donate to our classroom to further enhance our creativity as we go about learning. Thank you for your support.
