Information Power states that “ongoing assessment for improvement is essential to the vitality of an effective library media program.” In addition to assessing their program, library media specialists should also collaborate with the teacher to assess student learning.
Program Assessment
- Collaborate to develop a plan for identifying your media center's role in meeting the information needs of your school. A School Library Media Advisory Committee is necessary in this process.
- Use lunchroom conversations, surveys, interviews, observations, circulation reports, annual reports, and collection evaluation forms to gather information on your program. Include both qualitative and quantitative data.
- Make decisions based on the results of data analysis to develop plans and policies for improvement.
- Report the results of the program assessment to the school students, teachers and administrators. (see sample Surveys for Faculty)
Student Learning Assessment
- Design and use student performance assessment strategies and tools in collaboration with the teachers.
- Model communication products including web pages, interactive electronic presentations, video, and photography and help students learn how to create them.
- Information Power has excellent examples of student performance assessment strategies in Appendix E, pp. 176-181. (see sample Surveys for Students)
