Text Codes

We will be learning some new reading strategies that will help students become better readers and thinkers.  These strategies urge children to make a connection between the text and the world around them. We use text codes as a shorthand way to capture our thinking as we read. Text coding keeps the reading process interactive and reminds us that reading is active thinking.  We've developed a variety of codes to use along with our reading.  Since we can’t always write directly on the text, we use post-it-notes to help students hold their thinking while reading.  Please help your child practice using these text codes while reading at home.  I will be sending passages home from time to time with post-it-notes for them to practice the text codes.  Listed below are some of the text codes we have been using.

Codes for Responses
S = Summarize
L= Learned
T-S = (Text to Self) something that happened to you
R = Reminds me of something that happened to someone else
? = question
A = answer
