Realizing that in a philosophical conversation, many unexpected
topics may come up, it is still good to have a framework
of conversation in
mind at the onset. Here then is that framework.
Philosophers’ Society: Weekly Plans
Week 1: Knowledge
Focus Question: What is knowing?
Learner Action: drawing of a knowledge-o-meter, journaling
Planning thoughts: How do we know when we know something? What is knowledge?
What is certainty?
Week 2: Truth
Focus Question: What is truth?
Learner Action: drawing a packaging design for truth, journaling
Planning thoughts: Can there ever be opposing truths? How can we recognize
truth when we see/hear it?
Week 3: Beauty
Focus Question: What is beauty?
Learner Action: create a booklet entitled “Beauty is…”
Planning thoughts: Why is beauty important in our lives? What is the purpose
of art? What would the world be like without art? Without beauty?
Week 4: Justice
Focus Question: What does fair mean?
Learner Action: design stepping stones of justice (things required in order
for justice to have a chance: listening, lack of bigotry, empathy, sole conviction,
etc.)
Planning thoughts: What does injustice feel like? What does justice feel like?
What things have to be in place in order for justice to have a chance/a presence?
Week 5: Duty
Focus Question: What are our duties as human beings?
Learner Action: create a list of human duties and post it on the website,
invited outsiders to comment.
Planning thoughts: duties to one another, duties to the planet, to animals,
to ourselves
Week 6: Life
Focus Question: What is the meaning of life?
Learner Action: create slogans &/or billboards about the meaning of life
Planning thoughts: connect to all other topics
